Asbestos Survey and Management Plan Development for an Active Manufacturing Facility
An active commercial appliance manufacturing facility in Ohio contacted Cox-Colvin to conduct an asbestos survey of their primary manufacturing building. The building consisted of multiple floors of mixed use, with at least four generations of additions and renovations. Because the building did not have an existing comprehensive asbestos survey, the facility operations manager wanted to accurately document the asbestos material.
The client initially requested a detailed survey of the entire building to identify all suspected materials and test for the presence of asbestos. Cox-Colvin’s licensed and certified Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist (AHES) first conducted a thorough walkthrough of the building to identify the different areas and materials, followed by implementation of a material sampling scheme. Samples were collected as inconspicuous and non-invasive as possible. Each sample was thoroughly described, sealed, and shipped to an accredited lab for analysis. Following evaluation of laboratory results, Cox-Colvin’s AHES prepared an Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) at the request of the client for the various materials that were confirmed to contain asbestos. The AMG was developed to 1) assist the facility in identifying asbestos material within the building, 2) lay out a comprehensive plan to prioritize material to be abated or encapsulated/enclosed, 3) train maintenance personnel in the day to day cleaning and handling of asbestos material, 4) inform the work force of the hazard the material can cause, and 5) identify an organizational protocol for all current and future asbestos-related documentation.
