Craig Cox Awarded the Richard S. Ladd Award by ASTM

Craig Cox has been awarded the Richard S. Ladd D18 Standard Development Award by the ASTM D18 Committee on Soil and Rock.

The award is in recognition of the time and effort Craig dedicated in developing ASTM Standard D8408/D8408M-21 “Standard Guide for Development of Long-Term Monitoring Plans for Vapor Mitigation Systems.

ASTM D8408/D8408M-21 was published in October 2021.  This new standard presents factors to consider and information to be included when developing plans for effectively monitoring the performance of vapor intrusion mitigation systems.  The guide presents a practical and streamline process for developing monitoring requirements, time frames and factors needed to determine, for example, when a system should transition from active to passive, or when the system is no longer needed.  Rather than simply relying on costly periodic analytical sampling, the guide proposes, for example, a combination of periodic analytical sampling combined with more frequent monitoring of less expensive system performance indicators such as sub-slab-to-indoor air differential pressure readings (which can be easily automated through cloud-based data gathering systems).  To purchase the standard or for more information, go to https://www.astm.org/d8408_d8408m-21.html.

Craig has been at the forefront of the science of vapor intrusion for over 20 years and was the perfect person to take on the challenge. The award will be presented to Craig at the June 2022 ASTM meeting, in Seattle Washington.  In the meantime, please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved award.
